Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Do you have to be a Canadian citizen to become a laureate?
    No. Most laureates are Canadian citizens, but for those who are not, a major part of the achievement for which they were nominated must have been developed during a period of residence in Canada.
  2. Are six people always inducted?
    No. Up until 2006, there was no limit to the number of individuals who were inducted. Now, under normal circumstances, it is a maximum of six inductees.
  3. Do you consider candidates posthumously?
    Yes. However, there will only be ONE posthumous inductee for each induction.
  4. Who selects the inductees?
    Inductees are selected by a committee of prominent health and medical professionals from both the national and international communities. The committee acts at arm's length from the CMHF Board of Directors. .
  5. Are CMHF Board members or Selection Committee members allowed to make a nomination or be nominated for induction?
    No. Members of the CMHF Board of Directors or of the Selection Committee may not nominate or sponsor nominations, and cannot be selected while serving on the CMHF Board or Selection Committee.
  6. When will my candidate know if he/she has been selected?
    We will notify all successful candidates (or their next-of-kin) before the end of September.
  7. How will I know if my nomination has been successful?
    We will notify all nominators of the outcome of their nomination after all the candidates have been notified in September and before the public announcement in October.
  8. Do I have to re-submit my nomination if I would like my candidate to be reconsidered for the future inductions?
    All nominations remain active and eligible for three consecutive inductions. Following that period, nominations must be re-submitted for consideration.
  9. Are nominations confidential?
    Yes. All nominations are confidential.
